Bondo and Me: A Love Affair

I bought a house built in 1987. I absolutely love my house and all the character that comes along with age, but like me, sometimes it just needs a little "touch-up"! These are the "before" pictures of my back door. You will soon find that "before" and "after" pictures are my life nowadays. I had a lot of rotten and cracked wood around my house that needed to be fixed before I painted. I did these repairs on the wood around the garage doors as well. Instead of ripping off all of the old wood, and basically replacing the whole house, I found these products that have become my new favorite staples. BONDO's Rotted Wood Restorer and Wood Filler. Let's take a trip...

1. The first thing you want to do is prepare the area by cleaning off the dirt and scraping out any loose, rotten wood particles from the area.

2. Apply the Rotted Wood Restorer all over the area with the brush provided to stop the rot from spreading. Once it dries, the area will look and feel almost petrified.

3. I shoved little scrap pieces into the hole, so the Wood Filler had something to hold on to. Not sure how the pros do it, but this was my solution.

4. Time to mix the Bondo Wood Filler!

***TIP*** Once you mix the Wood Filler and the wood hardener together, this stuff dries really fast. Mix it on a large, flat surface that you don't mind tossing afterward, and do it close to your project. You will have about a minute before it starts to harden.

5. Quickly apply the Wood Filler to the area as thick as you can. You are going to sand it into the shape you want later. Use your hands to mold it on there. Let it dry completely.

6. Sand the area until it is flush with the rest of the board. You want your repair to disappear into the original wood like this:

7. Wipe all of the dust off of the area and paint it the color of your choice.

8. VOILA! You have a beautiful, new door frame!
